What happens to shingles during a storm?
Shingles can begin to come loose or be damaged when wind speeds reach around 45 to 50 mph. However, the extent of damage often depends on several factors, such as the type and quality of the shingles, the installation method, and the age and condition of the roof. Here’s a general breakdown:
45-50 mph: Light shingles may start to loosen or curl, but significant damage is not likely unless the shingles are already weakened or improperly installed.
50-60 mph: At these speeds, older or low-quality shingles may start to come off, and more substantial damage can occur, especially if there are already vulnerable areas on the roof.
60-70 mph: This range can cause significant shingle loss, particularly on roofs that are older or poorly maintained.
70+ mph: Major roof damage is likely, and it’s common to see widespread shingle loss, even on newer or well-maintained roofs.

How fast can mold DEVELOP after a hurricane?
Moisture Intrusion: Hurricanes can bring heavy rainfall, high winds, and storm surges that may lead to roof leaks, broken windows, or other openings that allow water to penetrate your home. This water often seeps into the ceiling, walls, and insulation.
Ideal Conditions for Mold: Mold thrives in damp, dark environments. When moisture gets trapped in the ceiling or between walls, it creates an ideal breeding ground for mold spores. Florida’s warm and humid climate further accelerates this growth.
Timeframe: Mold can start developing within 24-48 hours after water intrusion. If not properly dried and treated, it can spread rapidly, leading to visible discoloration (often black, green, or brown) on the ceiling and a musty odor.

LAYERS OF A ROOF SYSTEM
-
The decking layer is built over the attic structure. It is the base layer of the roofing system and provides the foundation for the rest of the layers. It is typically made of wood. In some cases, the decking layer may be damaged and need to be replaced as well.
-
The underlayment layer is installed on top of the decking layer and provides an additional layer of protection against moisture and leaks. It is typically made of a water-resistant material.
-
The ice and water shield is an extra layer used to help protect the decking and interior of the home from damage caused by ice dams that may occur due to the freeze/thaw during the winter months.
-
Starter Shingles are the first layer of shingles on the roof. They add an extra layer of seal and protection in your roofing system.
-
The top layer of the roofing system is the shingles. This layer is designed to provide the main barrier against the elements.
-
The flashing layer seals the gaps and joints in the roofing system, such as around chimneys, vents, and skylights. It is typically made of metal and helps to prevent water from penetrating the roof.
-
The final layer of a strong roofing system is the ventilation system. A ridge vent or other ventilation system helps to regulate the temperature inside the attic, which can prevent moisture buildup and reduce energy costs.
-

A strong roofing system can protect your home or building from harsh weather conditions, such as rain, wind, snow, and extreme temperatures.
